Submillimeter Backward Wave Oscillators

چکیده
NASA Lewis Research Center is engaged in a program to develop a series of backward wave osci l la tors (BWO's) for the frequency range 500 to 2000 GHz. Generically BWO's are electron beam travel ing wave tubes operating in a dispersive regime in which the group velocity and the phase veloci ty of the induced electromagnetic wave are in opposite direct ions. The osc i l la t ion frequency of a BWO is controlled by the electron beam velocity (anode voltage). Such tubes because of thei r frequency tunab i l l t y , phase locking capabi l i ty, and large bandwidth are ideal local osc i l la tors for heterdyne recelver/spectrometers. The design of the BWO's w i l l be discussed with emphasis on the etched slow wave structure, zero compression electron beam, long l i f e cathode, and moderate operating voltages.

Development of Efficient Backward Wave Oscillators for Submillimeter Applications
Calabazas Creek Research, Inc. is funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to develop efficient, light-weight, backward wave oscillators (BWOs) for applications from 300 GHz to 1 THz. These devices are needed as local oscillator (LO) sources in heterodyne receivers. Very low noise heterodyne receivers are needed at submillimeter wavelengths for low-background radioastronomy o...
متن کاملStarting oscillation conditions for gyrotron backward wave oscillators
A generalized linear theory that allows for mismatched boundary conditions was used in determining the starting oscillation conditions for gyrotron backward wave oscillators (gyro-BWO). The results reveal that the gyro-BWO interaction is normally caused by the interference between a constant-amplitude backward wave and a decaying backward wave. The latter becomes a forward-growing wave if the o...

The existing waveguide interface standards are generally found to be unsatisfactory above 110 GHz. An improved interface is proposed which is backward-compatible with the MIL-DTL-3922/67C standard and most of its higher-frequency variants. As there are currently no standard waveguide bands above 325 GHz, an extended set of bands is recommended for operation to 1100 GHz. Index Terms — Waveguides...

The use of Optical Control for millimeter wave systems has been extended recently to frequencies well over 100 GHZ. New types of optical modulators, detectors and mixers can now be used to make novel systems for the first time operating at submillimeter wavelengths. In addition to the fabrication of the next generation of traveling wave polymer modulators and phototransistors, we have also deve...
متن کاملTheory of backward distributed-feedback optical parametric amplifiers and oscillators
We derive a coupled-wave theory for backward phase-matched optical parametric amplifiers and oscillators in a dielectric modulated nonlinear optical material. Unlike a forward phase-matched distributed-feedback optical parametric oscillator, a backward oscillator of this type can have high-threshold gap modes at Bragg resonance and low-threshold detuned modes. In addition to the structure feedb...
